We have provided some detailed information for each travel option below, plus included a Question and Answer section at the bottom to help with any other travel enquiries you might have.

Hopefully this helps with planning your next holiday to Kalbarri!

Let’s start with the most obvious question: where is Kalbarri and how far from Perth is it located?

A large coastal town which forms part of Australia’s Coral Coast, Kalbarri is situated 580 kms north of Perth where the Murchison River meets the Indian Ocean. As mentioned above, there are three travel options for getting to Kalbarri: Car, Bus and Plane.

Car - Driving from Perth to Kalbarri

The journey from Perth to Kalbarri by car takes around 6 hours and 30 minutes of driving time. There are two main routes available to you with both being easy to navigate, plus you also get to take in some beautiful scenery along the way.

1) The scenic route along the Indian Ocean Drive. You will leave this highway just south of Dongara and join the Brand Highway which takes you directly to Kalbarri town. This is a slightly shorter route taking approximately 6 hours and 15 minutes of driving time along the beautiful coast line of Western Australia.
2) The Brand Highway – the route takes you inland and is the most direct route to Kalbarri. It is slightly longer than the scenic route, taking approximately 6 hours and 25 minutes of driving time.

When planning your driving trip to Kalbarri, we recommend allowing for up to 7 hours so you have time for a toilet and snack stop along the way.

Plane - Flying to Geraldton and Driving to Kalbarri

Another option is to fly from Perth directly to Geraldton, rent a car on arrival at Geraldton airport and drive north to Kalbarri. The journey time is much shorter totalling around 2.5 hours. The flight from Perth to Geraldton takes one hour and the car journey from Geraldton to Kalbarri takes around 90 minutes. It is of course a more expensive option with flights averaging around $250 and rental cars costing on average $60 per day but if you have limited time, it is by far the most efficient way to travel. Plane - Flying to Geraldton and catching a bus to Kalbarri

If you would prefer not to hire a car on arrival into Geraldton, another cheaper option is to catch the TransWA bus from Geraldton to Kalbarri with tickets costing around $30.  The bus journey is slightly longer than the car journey, taking around 2 hours and 15 minutes. The only limitation to this travel option is TransWA only offer this service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, plus you will need to make your own way from Geraldton airport to the bus depot in the centre of Geraldton town – a taxi cost of around $15.
